The story of our home

The Kitchen Conversion

In the beginning. This was the last area of the house we knew that we desperately needed to do something about before we could consider it “livable” – as you can see from the picture below, which was taken just before we moved in.

It was about year behind schedule, but finally under way, with the removal of the checkerboard vinyl floor and replacement of poky windows with a HUGE one 🙂

Plaster board ceilings (insulated) down-lights and electricals completed – this is looking through the back of the kitchen into the pantry (opposite the large window in the image above)

Tiles selected (from Burnt Earth catalog) and pattern designed by us, but expertly laid by Adrian Joscelyne and his team

Final coat of Floorcrete on the floors (pantry, kitchen and scullery all at the same time)

Floors having had three coats of sealer, and starting to put the cupboard carcasses in. The cupboards were supplied by KTB in Johannesburg, flat packed and couriered to Harare where we assembled them.

A little technical knowledge required, and a lot of youtubing. Decent tools help 🙂 The floor units werent too difficult at all.

Granite counter tops (never using Thomas again, he was an epic pain in the arse and NOT cheap) and flush Mukwa (hardwood) cutting board above dustbin cupboard being installed

Wall units installed, and cupboard doors

Counter top lighting installed

Finished product, complete with hessian roman blinds

The sliding door over the pantry was home made, complete with track and hangers – thanks Don for your assistance with the timber, and Ryan for the use of your tools and workshop 🙂

There are more pictures on the sliding door build here

The tiles and extractor hood for the stove were late arrivals. They were a little bit outside the budget for the original build
