The story of our home

The Swimming Pool

We built a swimming pool over the wall a year ago (to the week) and lost access to it once the new tenants moved… just enough time for us to realize we really wanted one of our own.

It was perfect. Big enough to swim lengths, practice tumble-turns or just sink yourself into on a hot day, but also small enough to run filtration for only 4 hours a day (on a solar powered pump) require next-to-no chemicals and remain at a comfortably warm 27 degrees Celsius through the summer. So we decided to copy and paste with a few minor alterations like the Roman steps, more underwater lights and a slightly deeper deep-end

Shallow end: 0.8m
Deep end: 2.0m
Total Volume: 35,000L
Pump: 400W
Lights: 4 x 4W
Mosaic Tiles: Douglas Jones – Cancun Blend
Plaster: Poseidon – Oceana (Marbelite)
Copings: Set In Stone 300mm (Whisper Grey)
Contractor: Meidler Pools
Concrete: 17 cu. m. (200mm thickness)
Steel: 10mm rebar (200x200mm mesh)
Construction Time: 8 weeks (completed 2 August 2022)

Before
Shape finalized, grass removed and excavation started
Excavation complete
Steel mesh complete
Cement truck #1 of 3
Concrete, waterproofing and copings complete
Douglas Jones Cancun Blend mosaics fitted
Poseidon Oceana marbelite plaster complete
A fence was the first thing to be installed. Doesn’t look great but hopefully will serve its purpose!

The finished product looks great, although I was not altogether impressed with the job. It took 4 weeks for the marbelite to arrive (after the waterproof plaster had been completed), the mosaics are not level on the deep end, the dimensions and depths are quite different to the supplied plan and the pump is noisy and draws 600W (because its a cheap substitute, whereas I’d requested a DAB Euroswim M50)

However! If it doesnt leak for the next 30 years I’ll be happy 🙂

Work is underway to raise the grass levels around the pool, so it’ll be a mess for the next 8 weeks or so. I’ll post an update once its looking sharp!
